Following the major earthquake on
March 28, 2025, at 1:20 PM in Myanmar, with a magnitude of 8.2 and a depth of
10 kilometers, the epicenter was located on the Sagaing Fault near Mandalay,
Myanmar, with tremors radiating outwards for a distance of 800 kilometers in
all directions.
Today (March 31, 2025), rescue
workers are continuing their search for survivors who may be trapped under the
rubble. The severity of the earthquake has severely impacted urban areas in
many parts of Myanmar, particularly in Naypyidaw, Mandalay, the Sagaing Region,
Bago, Magway, and Shan State, which are among the areas hardest hit by this
disaster. The death toll from this earthquake has risen to approximately 1,700,
with over 3,400 injured and around 300 people still missing.
The Asia Pacific Regional Director
of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)
stated that the earthquake in Myanmar is not just a disaster, but a complex
humanitarian crisis, compounding existing vulnerabilities. This disaster is
extremely severe and requires urgent assistance, with humanitarian aid needs
increasing hourly.
IFRC has launched an emergency
appeal for $100 million USD, or over 3.39 billion Thai baht, to assist more
than 100,000 people, or approximately 20,000 households, in Myanmar with relief
and recovery over the next 24 months.
Thai Red Cross Society expresses its
condolences for the losses from this event and mourns the deceased and those
who have suffered. We invite you to join us in extending a helping hand to
those affected by the earthquake in Myanmar through members of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
