Pneumonia (lung inflammation) is an infectious disease that can rapidly escalate to severe illness, requiring hospitalization, ICU admission, or even resulting in death. This is especially true for high-risk individuals—such as the elderly, patients with heart disease or chronic lung conditions, and those with weakened immune systems—who face a significantly higher risk than the general population.

Each year, around 200,000 to 250,000 cases of pneumonia are reported. Furthermore, Streptococcus pneumoniae does not affect only the lungs; it can also spread to the bloodstream and the membranes surrounding the brain (meningitis), leading to life-threatening complications.

Common symptoms of pneumonia include fever, coughing, chest pain, rapid breathing, and difficulty breathing. However, in elderly patients, symptoms may not present as clearly. Instead, they often appear as confusion, lethargy, or decreased responsiveness, which can delay treatment and increase the risk of severe complications.

For impoverished elderly individuals and vulnerable patients, the severity of the disease goes beyond the infection itself. It means longer hospital stays, higher medical costs, a loss of daily independence, and an increased risk of death—largely because many lack the financial resources to access timely prevention.

Pneumococcal vaccination is one of the most vital ways to prevent the disease and reduce its severity. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-20) for the elderly and high-risk individuals due to their heightened vulnerability to severe illness.

Thai Red Cross Society invites you to donate to the campaign “Pneumonia Vaccines for 1,000 Underprivileged Patients.” Our goal is to raise 2,347,000 THB to purchase PCV-20 vaccines for high-risk individuals by 2026. Beneficiaries will be transparently screened by medical specialists at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thai Red Cross Society, ensuring the vaccines reach impoverished patients free of charge to reduce severe illness and enhance their safety.
