'Vejapah' Royal Initiative Mobile Floating Clinic, Thai Red Cross

In 1955, during an era when transportation relied heavily on waterways and traveling to major city hospitals was nearly impossible for impoverished families or remote communities, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (King Rama IX) observed: "When people fall ill, they rely on traditional medicine, which is ineffective for many conditions."

His Majesty graciously granted the Mobile Floating Clinic Vejapah (pronounced Vetch-a-pha) to Thai Red Cross Society. This boat brought doctors, medication, and medical care directly to patients along the riverbanks, completely free of charge. For over 70 years, this stream of royal compassion brought hope to countless underprivileged individuals.

Although Vejapah is temporarily grounded for maintenance by the Royal Motorboat Section of the Royal Conveyance Division, Bureau of the Royal Household, the healthcare needs of people in remote areas remain constant.

In 2026, Thai Red Cross Society's Relief and Community Health Bureau—in collaboration with the Office of the Royal Development Projects Board (RDPB)—pivoted operations from waterways to land by establishing the "Mobile Medical Unit Following the Royal Initiative of the Royal-Sponsored Launch Vejapah, Thai Red Cross Society." Carrying forward the King's royal initiative, multidisciplinary teams of doctors, dentists, nurses, and medical personnel deploy into the field to deliver comprehensive medical and dental care to vulnerable populations.

This mission aims to holistically restore the quality of life for remote communities. Key targets for each field deployment include:

·         General Medicine & Applied Acupuncture: Delivering treatment to 1,000 underprivileged patients.

·         Dental Care: Providing oral health services for 400 individuals.

·         Health Education: Conducting health literacy and disease prevention training for 500 residents.

·         Relief Packages: Distributing 500 essential supply kits to vulnerable community members.

·         Mobility Support: Providing 2 wheelchairs per day for elderly and disabled individuals unable to walk.

·         Emergency Medical Supplies: Donating 10 first-aid medicine cabinets to local schools and temples.

·         Bedridden Patient Care: Supplying 10 home-care kits (including adult diapers) and conducting home visits by walking teams to deliver close, specialized care.
